Luffy Meets Whitebeard Pirates Fanfic
The first season of the One Pieceanime series was produced by Toei Animation, and directed by Konosuke Uda. The season is adapted from the first twelve volumes of the manga by Eiichiro Oda and aired on Fuji Television from October 20, 1999 through March 21, 2001, totalling 62 episodes. The first season depicts the exploits of the pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy and as he gathers his crew and heads to the Grand Line in search of the titular treasure, the 'One Piece'.
In 2004, 4Kids Entertainment licensed the series for a heavily edited,[1]dubbed broadcast. 4Kids edited the episodes for content, merged one episode and left out 18 episodes, thus reducing the season's episode count to a total of 44 episodes. The series made its U.S. premiere on September 18, 2004 on the Fox Broadcasting Company as part of its Fox Box programing block, lasting until July 23, 2005.[2]Funimation later licensed the series and released the first season in four unedited, bilingual compilations; the first was released on May 27, 2008 and the last was released on March 31, 2009.
The season uses four pieces of theme music: two opening themes and two ending themes. The first opening theme is the award-winning title 'We Are!' (ウィーアー!Wī Ā!), performed by Hiroshi Kitadani for the first 47 episodes. The second opening, which was used for the rest of the season, is 'Believe' by Folder5. The first ending theme, titled 'Memories' for the first 30 episodes, and was performed by Maki Otsuki, who also performed the second ending theme song, titled 'Run! Run! Run!', for the rest of the season. 4Kids used original music in their adaptation,[3] while Funimation opted for English-language versions of the theme music pieces.

The series begins with an attack on a cruise ship at the hands of Alvida. Coby, a slave of Alvida, discovers a barrel. One of Alvida's pirates attempts to open the barrel, but a young boy emerges and accidentally hits him. The remaining pirates attack him, but the stranger stops them and says that his name is Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy drags Coby to the storage cellar of the ship, where he eats and converses with Coby, who reveals his dream of being a marine. Alvida confronts Luffy, but he escapes and knocks her pirate crew down with his Devil Fruit power. Luffy explains that he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, therefore he has the properties of rubber. Coby, inspired by Luffy, stands up for himself when Alvida confronts them. Luffy uses his Gum-Gum Pistol technique on Alvida. Luffy and Coby sail away in a 'borrowed' boat from Alvida's crew. Luffy asks about the pirate hunter Coby mentioned earlier. Coby says that he was captured by the Marines, and Luffy announces his intention of asking him to join his crew.

Luffy and Coby arrive at an island with a large Marine base, where Luffy discovers the swordsman, Roronoa Zoro tied to a pole. Rika, a young girl, offers Zoro some rice balls that she made herself. Helmeppo, the son of Marine Captain Morgan, discovers this and has Rika thrown out. Luffy asks Zoro to join his crew, but Zoro refuses and has Luffy give him the rice balls. Luffy and Coby meet Rika in town, who is happy to hear that Zoro enjoyed the rice balls. She tells them how Helmeppo brought his vicious pet dog into their bar and that Zoro knocked it out to protect everyone inside. He then made a deal with Helmeppo: if he can survive being tied to a pole with no food or water for thirty days, then Helmeppo will spare the people in the bar. However, Helmeppo says that he will execute Zoro the next day despite his word. Luffy punches him, and Helmeppo runs off to tell his father. While Luffy invades the Navy base to find Zoro's swords, Coby attempts to untie Zoro and explains the situation to him. Morgan orders that they are both to be executed. The soldiers open fire, but before the bullets can reach them, Luffy leaps from the base and uses his rubber body to block the bullets.

Luffy hands the three swords to Zoro in exchange for Zoro joining his crew. Luffy and Morgan engage in battle. All of Morgan's attacks miss and Luffy knocks Morgan to the ground. Meanwhile, Helmeppo takes Coby hostage. But Coby declares that he will not stand in the way of Luffy's dream, even if it means death. Luffy strikes Helmeppo, while Zoro takes out Morgan right before he can kill Luffy. As Morgan collapses, the Marines toss their weapons into the air in celebration of their captain's defeat. Later, Luffy, Zoro, and Coby are in the town restaurant with Rika and her mom. Marines step into the restaurant, and as Luffy and Zoro are pirates, they must leave the island immediately. Luffy and Zoro get ready to go, and the head of the Marines asks if Coby is with them. Luffy goes on to explain that Coby spent time aboard Alvida's pirate ship as her slave, and this makes Coby angry as it will ruin his chances of enrolling in the Marines. Coby punches Luffy. The Marines see Coby is not with them, and so order Luffy and Zoro to leave. As they do, Coby asks to join the Marines, and is accepted. Outside, Luffy and Zoro climb into their boat, and as they set sail, the Marines salute them for saving the town, including Coby. Coby vows to meet Luffy again, as a Marine meeting a pirate.

In a flashback, a seven-year-old Luffy sits in a bar filled with the pirate crew of the 'Red-Haired' Shanks, begging him to take him out to sea. But the pirate captain refuses. A bandit named Higuma enters and orders several barrels of booze. Shanks offers him the last bottle but Higuma smashes it and humiliates Shanks. After the bandit leaves the bar, all of the pirates start to laugh. Luffy gets angry that Shanks did not fight back and in a huff eats a purple fruit lying on the bar. Shanks notices this and tries to make Luffy spit it out, but it was too late. Shanks tells Luffy that he just ate the Gum Gum Fruit, a Devil Fruit, and now he is a rubber man and won't be able to ever swim again. Later, Luffy gets attacked by Higuma and his bandits. He is about to be killed, when Shanks and his crew arrive and effortlessly defeat Higuma's men. Frightened, Higuma throws down a smoke bomb and makes his escape, taking Luffy with him. He flees out to sea in a boat. There he throws the non-swimmer into the water. As Higuma laughs at Luffy's plight, a Sea King appears behind him and devours him whole. The sea monster then goes for Luffy, but Shanks stops the sea monster as it takes a bite, and with one look, drives the beast away. Luffy clutches Shanks and starts crying, since Shanks' arm was bitten off by the creature. Shanks replies that it is fine, as long as Luffy is safe. As the pirates get ready to leave, Luffy decides he will become a pirate on his own, that he will gather a crew that will beat Shanks', and that he will become King of the Pirates. Shanks gives his straw hat to Luffy and tells him to return it some day, as a great pirate. Back in the present, Luffy slingshots into the sky to catch a bird. Instead he is caught himself. Zoro, now alone in their boat, tries to keep up, paddling. On his way he picks up three castaways from Buggy's crew. The bird, carrying Luffy flies over a town, where it is shot down by Buggy's men. Luffy falls down and lands right in front of Nami, who is running away from Buggy's crew for stealing their precious map to the Grand Line.

Nami pretends that Luffy is her boss, using the distraction to escape from Buggy's men. After Luffy beats them, she asks him to join her. Then Luffy finds out that she is a navigator, and asks her to join his crew of pirates. As she hates pirates, she refuses. Then she tricks Luffy into letting himself be tied up and brought to Buggy, where he is locked up in a small cage, while Nami fakes joining Buggy's crew. As proof of loyalty, Buggy demands of Nami to kill Luffy, but she cannot bring herself to do it. As Buggy's pirates attack her, Zoro arrives to save his captain and her. Buggy recognizes Zoro as the pirate hunter and attacks him. Zoro cuts Buggy into pieces. Believing Buggy to be dead, he sheaths his swords and is stabbed in the back. The wound puts Zoro at a disadvantage. He picks up the cage with Luffy inside and the three escape.

Still trapped in the cage, Luffy meets a small dog guarding his master's store, despite knowing that his owner is dead. Mohji the Beast Tamer's lion, Ritchie, inadvertently breaks Luffy's cage open, and sends him flying. The dog tries to protect the store, but is no match for the much stronger Ritchie, and Mohji burns the store down. Angered by Mohji destroying what the dog finds precious, Luffy mercilessly punches him out. Moved by Luffy's concern for the dog, Nami agrees to work with Luffy for the time being.

When Luffy, Zoro, and Nami land on another island, Usopp appears to greet them, with three children hiding in the bushes. After a failed attempt on Usopp's part to scare the pirates away they talk about Shanks and his marksman Yasopp, Usopp's father. Usopp brings them to a restaurant, where after a meal, he leaves them to head for a mansion outside town. The mansion belongs to the sickly young woman Kaya. She and Klahadore, her butler, talk about Usopp and Klahadore forbids her to see him. Usopp comes anyway and he tells Kaya a story about fighting a giant goldfish with droppings the size of islands. Back at the restaurant, Usopp's small friends, the Usopp Pirates enter in search of their captain. They bring Luffy, Zoro, and Nami to Kaya's mansion, and tell them how Usopp tells Kaya lies to cheer her up since her parents died and she became ill. Luffy decides they should ask her for a ship and as there are bodyguards guarding the gate, he slingshots the whole group over the fence. They crash into the ground near Usopp, and as they get up, Klahadore comes out and calls them intruders.

At Kaya's mansion, Klahadore goes on about how Usopp's father is a filthy pirate, making Usopp livid and punch him in the face. Klahadore continues taunting Usopp, who eventually leaves. Later, Kaya is crying in her room. Klahadore enters to bring her a meal and reminds her of the day he came to the mansion, when he was battered and her father took him in. He then claims that if anything happened to Kaya, he would not forgive himself. The Usopp Pirates, Nami, and Zoro encounter Jango , who claims to be only a passing hypnotist. He then hypnotizes the Usopp Pirates — and accidentally himself — into falling asleep in the middle of the road. Later, by a cliff overlooking the ocean, Luffy and Usopp witness Jango and Klahadore — whose true identity turns out to be that of the infamous pirate Captain Kuro—plotting a raid of the village and a murder of Kaya. Luffy yells at them not to get rid of Kaya, but Jango uses his hypnotism to put Luffy to sleep, causing him to fall off the cliff. He lands on his head and appears to be dead. They do not worry about Usopp knowing, because of his reputation as a liar.

Zoro, Nami, and the Usopp Pirates still waiting around for Luffy and Usopp. The Usopp Pirates mention how Usopp always goes to the coast. They then spot Usopp running up to them, but he does not respond to their questions and runs right past them. Usopp is unable to convince the villagers that pirates are coming and that they have to abandon their homes. Meanwhile, Zoro and the others find Luffy. At Kaya's mansion, Merry shows Kaya the glasses that she got him to buy for Klahadore's third year of being a caretaker. Usopp is unable to convince Kaya of Kuro's assassination attempt and leaves, but gets shot by Merry in the process. Kuro announces his plans to attack the village at dawn. At sunset, Usopp remembers the stories he would tell Kaya, when Luffy and the Usopp Pirates arrive. Usopp tells about Kuro's plan, but then says that he was joking about it. The Usopp pirates abandon him. Nami asks Usopp why he said he made everything up. Usopp replies that it is because he is a liar. He says how he loves the village and wants to protect it, so he will stand against the pirates. Luffy, Zoro, and Nami decide to join him, and so Usopp stands up, declaring that even though he is scared, he will fight.

Usopp, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami formulate a plan on the slope for when the pirates come. Meanwhile, Kuro breaks the glasses Kaya gave him and injures Merry with his clawed glove. Kuro then steps into Kaya's room, and he holds his blood-stained claw over Kaya's head, remembering the deed he has to commit the following day. By the coast, the Black Cat Pirates' ship approaches Syrup Village. Jango reiterates the plan to his men. Meanwhile, Luffy, Usopp, Zoro, and Nami stand on the slope leading to the village, and have poured a barrel of oil on it to make it slippery. The plan is that when the Black Cat Pirates slip on the oil, the four will spring out and attack them. Dawn breaks, and so the Black Cat Pirates land on the coast, spotting Luffy's boat. At that moment, Luffy and the others are waiting for the pirates as the sun has now risen, and Nami hears the pirates coming from the north. Usopp notes that there is an identical slope at the north end of the village, and they realize they are at the wrong coast. Panicking, Nami then realizes that their ship is located at the north coast, and their treasure will be robbed by the pirates. Luffy and Usopp take off running for the coast. Zoro and Nami start to leave, but Nami slips on the oil and drags Zoro down the slope, stepping on him to climb back up. Zoro is unable to get up the slippery slope, and he slides to the bottom, but eventually uses his swords to pull his way up. At the north coast, Usopp arrives, surprised that Luffy hasn't come yet, who is now lost. The Black Cat Pirates arrive, and Usopp stands up to them, but realizes he can't beat them by himself. He sees the pirates taking the treasure from the Straw Hats' ship, and he says that the treasure belongs to him, and he'll give it to them if they leave. Jango decides to hypnotize Usopp instead, but Nami arrives in the nick of time and whacks Usopp in the head, knocking him over, refusing to give up her treasure. Usopp then reports that Luffy has not arrived yet, and is probably lost. The Black Cat Pirates then charge, and Usopp stands up to them, but they knock him down swiftly. Usopp struggles to fight them, but there are far too many. He is shocked when they are all sent flying back, and sees that Luffy and Zoro have arrived. Zoro yells at Nami about leaving him there, and Luffy yells at Usopp for not telling him which was north. However, united, the four face off against the invading Black Cat Pirates.

Jango kneels beside the fallen pirates and starts to hypnotize them. Once the hypnotism takes effect, the pirates became wild and ravenous, and foaming at their mouths, they charge at the Straw Hats. One pounds down a cliff with his fist. Zoro says that he and Luffy will handle it, but Luffy was also hypnotized, becoming a wild animal himself. Luffy charges down the slope and uses his Gum Gum Gatling technique to plow through the pirates with ease. Luffy keeps charging, and soon runs past the pirates, causing Jango to fear that he will be the next target. Luffy takes the bow of Kuro's ship in an attempt to kill him, but Jango hypnotizes Luffy, and so Luffy falls asleep, the bow falling on top of him and squishing him as he does this. With Luffy out of the way, Jango prepares for the next attack. Seeing the pirates are defeated, he calls for Siam and Butchie and orders them to attack. They turn out to be cowards, but after some heavy persuasion they charge for Zoro. Zoro blocks their claws with his sword, and engages in a great fight with the two Nyaban Brothers. Zoro slashes Butchie through the lowersection, but finds out Butchie has a very thin waist. He sits on top of Zoro and Sham leaps down, but Zoro manages to avoid the bone-crushing attack that leaves a crater. Butchie then uses his cat-like abilities to steal Zoro's two swords, and throws them away. Zoro has no chance to grab them and faces another assault by the Nyaban Brothers. Usopp decides to help and fires at the brothers, but Zoro blocks it with his back, yelling at Nami and Usopp to not get themselves killed. Nami then runs for Zoro's swords, picking them up, but Jango reacts swiftly and slashes her in the shoulder with his chakram. Just as Jango and the others are about to kill the Straw Hats, Kuro appears, annoyed that his plan has foiled.

The episode begins with Kuro standing impatiently. Siam and Butchie decide that Kuro, having been inactive for three years, has lost his edge, and that they can defeat him. They charge at Kuro but only swing at thin air, and Kuro appears behind them, holding his claws to their necks. He says that everyone has five minutes to finish their job, or he will kill them all. He releases the Meowban Brothers, pushing them so that they can continue their battle with Zoro. However, Nami sees her chance and kicks Zoro's swords through the air. Zoro catches them, and as the Nyaban Brothers charge at him he unleashes a great Toragiri, taking both of them down with one mighty swing. He turns to Kuro and declares he won't even need five minutes. Nami realizes how dangerous Kuro is, and so runs to wake up Luffy. As she runs, Django spots her, and hurls a chakram. Nami turns and steps on Luffy's face, waking up Luffy abruptly. He springs up, pulling Nami down just as the chakram strikes him right in the mouth. Luffy stays standing, though, and he breaks the chakram with his teeth. He then sees Nami is wounded, and furious, prepares for battle with Kuro. At the mansion, Kaya wakes up from a nightmare, and she heads down the stairs to find Merry leaning against the wall, bloody and wounded. Merry explains the whole situation to Kaya, how Kuro is planning to take kill her and take her money in a will. Kaya realizes that Usopp was telling the truth the entire time, and so she puts on her overcoat and sets out. She arrives at the top of the slope, and tells Kuro to stop immediately, and that Merry told her everything. Kuro turns to her and wonders why Merry isn't dead, and Kaya sees the state Usopp is in. Usopp charges in and aims a punch at Kuro's face, but Kuro avoids the swing and so Usopp careens into the ground. Kaya then pulls out a gun and points it at Kuro, ordering him to leave the village. Kuro reminds Kaya of the fun times they had together, and Kaya hesitates. Kuro takes the gun from Kaya's hands, knowing she won't shoot, and he drops it to the ground. Usopp picks up the gun and fires at Kuro, but Kuro sidesteps the shot and knocks Usopp down. From out of nowhere flies Luffy's fist, striking Kuro in the face. As Kuro falls back, Luffy retracts his arm and declares that he has a hundred more where that came from.

Zoro and Buchi (of the Meowban Brothers) face off once again as Luffy and Kuro begin their fight. Usopp orders the Usopp Pirates to run away with Kaya, but Jango goes after them, and Zoro goes after both while carrying Usopp in order to find the way. A flashback reveals that Captain Kuro faked his death by hypnotizing one of his men into claiming to be him, and hypnotizing Captain Morgan to think that he caught him, before becoming Kaya's butler.

The episode begins with the Usopp Pirates and Kaya running from Django through the forest. Django hurls his chakram and cuts down many trees, searching everywhere for them, and Kaya falls down. She tells the Usopp Pirates to run before they are killed, but they stay and fight, deciding to follow their captain's orders and fight to the death for Kaya. Back at the slope, Kuro claims that he hated being a pirate. Luffy refuses to be like him and Kuro uses his Silent Step to move quickly. Luffy gets the timing right, however, and pounds Kuro down. Kuro gets back up and announces that he is going to kill his entire crew, and that it was part of his plan from the beginning. Luffy claims that Usopp could beat Kuro. Kuro laughs it off and uses Shakushi, causing him to disappear. As Luffy wonders where he went, Nami finishes up looting the Black Cat pirate ship, disappointed by the amount of treasure. She then wonders if the battle is over, but sees that Kuro slashes through several of his crewmates, taking them down quicker than the naked eye can see. Luffy gets even more angry, but just after Kuro slashes him in the chest, he grabs Kuro's arm and slams him onto the ground. Kuro stands up and says that now his crew is suffering because Luffy wouldn't let them die quickly, and so Kuro uses Shakushi once again to disappear. In the forest, at that moment, Django continues searching for the Usopp Pirates, and they toss him a white flag. Django walks forward and so the Usopp Pirates launch their ambush. Django trips over a rope and one of the Usopp Pirates showers him with pepper, making him sneeze. The second jumps out and strikes Django in the groin with a frying pan. The third leaps down from a large rock and takes a swing at Django's head, but Django sits up in time and knocks his attacker away. Kaya then comes out, telling Django not to hurt the kids, but Django reports that it was his orders from Kuro to kill the children. Kaya then grabs Django's chakram and holds it in front of her throat, threatening to kill herself without writing the will. Django agrees, and so he gets Kaya to write the will. Once finished, he grabs her by the neck and holds her against a tree, holding up a chakram to kill her. Zoro is still running through the woods with Usopp on his back, and Usopp spots Django. Kuro slices up the rocks, followed by cutting up Luffy's left shoulder as he glances in anger as the episode ends.

Kuro's ultimate attack, 'Shakushi', attacks everything in the area, whether friend or foe, and Luffy becomes enraged by his lack of regard for his crew. Luffy manages to catch Kuro by binding his limbs and headbutts him with Gum Gum Bell, while Usopp shoots Jango with an Exploding Star, saving Kaya. Usopp convinces Kaya and the Usopp pirates to keep the incident a secret in order to enable the village to stay peaceful. Kaya gives the Straw Hats the Going Merry as a gift, and Luffy invites Usopp into the crew, having befriended him.

The episode opens with Usopp pretending he is in a great battle as captain of the Going Merry, fending off attacking pirates. As he is doing so, Luffy announces that he has finished the pirate flag for their ship, and holds it up. It's a terribly drawn skull and crossbones, of course. The others are horrified of the artwork, and so Usopp tells them that he is a great painter. He paints a pirate flag with his own face on it, but the others reject it so he paints a proper pirate flag, a very nice one at that. They fly it on the mast and continue to sail. As they are sailing, Nami spots an island in the distance with her telescope, saying it is Legendary Treasure Island. Usopp says how he heard that there is a valuable treasure on the island, but if one tries to claim it they will face God's wrath. As the Straw Hats draw nearer to the island, the weather turns foul and the waters very choppy. After a tough sail they make it to the island. The Straw Hats head into the jungle, looking for treasure. Zoro lies down and starts to nap, and as Usopp is shocked at how he can sleep in a creepy place like this, the Straw Hats find themselves surrounded by strange animals, creatures that are combinations of two or more animals. A voice booms through the jungle, claiming to be the Guardian God of the island and telling them to leave. Luffy picks up a lion pig that bites him on the face. The voice is shocked and Luffy explains he ate the Devil's Fruit. A gun then pokes out through a bush and shoots Luffy in the back, but Luffy bounces the bullet into the air with his Gomu Gomu powers. Luffy then spots a twitching green bush, and the owner of the voice takes off running. Luffy, Usopp, and Nami catch up to the man in the treasure chest, named Gaimon. Luffy explains to him how he wants to go to the Grand Line and claim One Piece, but Gaimon doesn't think he can do it. Luffy and Gaimon converse about how they can't read a map, and Nami is angered by this. Gaimon then explains how he became trapped in the treasure box as Zoro finally joins them. He explains that twenty years ago, he was with his crew in search of the treasure, and as they were leaving, he noticed how the captain never searched on top of a large cliff. Gaimon scaled the cliff but slipped and fell, getting stuck in a treasure box. He found that his crew had left, and he thought he would have the treasure on the ridge to himself, but found he could not climb in the box. When Luffy tries to pull Gaimon out of the box, he explains that his body grew to match the shape of the box, and his body will be ruined if the box is broken. Luffy then realizes that Gaimon uses the strange animals of the island to ward off visitors. Inspired by Gaimon's story, the Straw Hats decide to help Gaimon find the treasure. They come to the ridge and Luffy uses Gomu Gomu no Rocket to launch himself up to the top, where there are five treasure chests. He refuses to hand them over to Gaimon, and while this shocks and angers Nami and Usopp, Gaimon realizes that the treasure boxes must be empty. Luffy confirms this, and so Gaimon begins to cry, saying that he's been guarding nothing for twenty years. Luffy says it could be worse, as he could have died guarding nothing, and he offers Gaimon to join their crew. Gaimon decides to stay with the strange animals of the island, however, as he has decided to protect them instead of the treasure. With this adventure behind them, the Straw Hats set sail in the Going Merry once again, waving goodbye to Gaimon as the episode draws to a close.

While Usopp & Luffy fool around with the ship's cannon one day, Zoro dreams about his childhood. He had joined a dojo after losing to the teacher's daughter, Kuina. Despite training and growing stronger, he still was unable to defeat her. When she told him that he would one day defeat her as she grew weaker, Zoro grew upset over her defeatist attitude, and made her promise that one of them would be the world's greatest swordsman. She died soon afterward, and Zoro dedicated himself to fulfilling the promise. Back in the present, a bounty hunter attacks the ship, but Zoro recognizes him.

After a review of the ending of the previous episode, the episode begins with Marine Lieutenant Iron Fist Fullbody pouring a drink to a beautiful lady on his marine ship and saying how he is taking her to the greatest restaurant in the world. The lady then questions if the restaurant is in the middle of the ocean, which Fullbody answers by telling her to just look forward to it. In the meantime, on the Going Merry, Zoro recognizes the intruder who got beat up by Luffy from the last episode as Johnny. Johnny then brings the straw hat pirates' attention to Yosaku, who lies ill on his and Johnny's small ship. Turns out that Johnny, Yosaku, and Zoro used to be bounty hunter partners some time ago. Johnny then proceeds to tell the straw hat pirates that he took Yosaku to a small rock island to rest, which was coincidentally blown up by Usopp and Luffy for target practice in the last episode. Usopp and Luffy quickly apologize. Johnny, however, was more worried about Yosaku's condition, which Nami quickly diagnosed as scurvy caused by a lack of Vitamin C. Luffy and Usopp then shove a bunch of lemons into Yosaku's mouth and Yosaku is revived!.. or at least for 5 minutes. The straw hat pirates conclude that they need a cook for their potential nutritional problems. Johnny points out that they probably can find a good candidate in the floating sea restaurant known as Baratie. He also states that the one Zoro has been looking for, Hawk-eyes Mihawk, is near there too. Thus they head to Baratie, which actually is pretty much right next to where they were. They are then passed by Fullbody's marine ship. Fullbody doesn't recognize the straw hat pirates mark, but he recognizes Johnny and Yosaku as worthless pirate hunters. Johnny responds by shouting 'this is what pirate hunters do' while throwing a bunch of wanted posters in the air. Nami takes note of the Arlong poster with an angry look and crumbles the poster in her hands. Fullbody then orders his crew to sink the pirate ship. Luffy attempts to deflect the cannon but after losing his grip accidentally deflects it to the head chief's room in Baratie, where the head chief was subsequently injured and demands that Luffy work off his crime by working for the restaurant for one year. In Baratie, while attempting to impress his girlfriend, Fullbody instead becomes humiliated by Sanji's witty remarks. Turns out that Sanji is actually the Assistant Head Chef. Frustrated, Fullbody destroys his table full of food. Sanji, who is angry that Fullbody wasted precious food, beats Fullbody up.

After a review of the last episode, the episode begins with Patty, a cook for Baratie, picking his nose in the bathroom while making a monologue about how serving the customers who have money is the number one concern for a restaurant. Upon leaving the bathroom, Patty becomes furious when he sees that Sanji is beating up Fullbody, who is a customer. Sanji replies that customer or not, Fullbody insulted a chef and his food. At this moment, the head chef and Luffy come crashing down from the ceiling because the head chef was kicking Luffy too hard while trying to convince him that he has to work at Baratie for a whole year to pay off his debt. The head chef then kicks Sanji to calm him down and also kicks Fullbody out of the restaurant. Fullbody's subordinate then comes running into the restaurant yelling that their prisoner, a member of Don Krieg's pirates, has escaped. The customers are terrified because Don Krieg is supposedly the strongest pirate in East Blue. The pirate shoots the marine from behind and comes in to order food. Patty recognizes the pirate as a customer and asks if the pirate has any money on him. The pirate points a gun at Patty and says 'is a bullet okay?' Patty then beats the pirate up and doesn't recognize the pirate as a customer since he has no money. Sanji, on the other hand, heads to the kitchen and starts making a meal. Fullbody in the meantime, leaves the restaurant sneakily (along with the subordinate who got shot earlier, guess he is still alive). Sanji brings his meal to the pirate, who was thrown out by Patty. Sanji states that, for him, a customer is anybody who is hungry. He also states that he understands the feeling of starvation more than anybody else. The pirate then grabs the meal and gobbles it up, while crying and saying that this is the most delicious dish he has ever had in his entire life. Luffy, who was watching the whole thing, attempts to recruit Sanji as the cook for his crew. After refusing and some conversing, we find out that the head chef used to be a notorious pirate and the restaurant often comes into conflict with other pirates after his fame. Luffy, as always, is stubborn and insists that Sanji joins them. We also find out that the other pirate's name is Gin. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, we learn that Don Krieg is the captain of a fleet of 50 ships. Gin thanks Sanji for the meal and leaves. Sanji throws the dishes into the ocean to get rid of the evidence that Sanji is giving out food for free, which makes Gin even more grateful. Luffy is then sent back to work, where he ends up breaking even more dishes and makes a big commotion in the kitchen. The rest of the crew, Zoro, Nami, and Usopp, turn out to be eating a meal at the restaurant. Sanji, after seeing Nami, is captivated by her beauty. While flirting with Nami, the head chef tells Sanji that he's annoying and that he doesn't need him anymore. Meanwhile, Gin informs Don Krieg of the restaurant, where Don Krieg makes clear his intention to 'visit' the restaurant.

Ghin returns to the Baratie with his captain, Don Krieg, on a nearly destroyed ship, and begs the cooks to feed him. It is revealed that Chef Zeff was a great pirate known as Red Foot Zeff who sailed in the Grand Line, but lost his leg at some point. Ghin explains the catastrophe the fleet met in Grand Line when they encountered Hawk-Eyes Mihawk, who destroyed all but one of their ships. Krieg feeds his men and is about to begin to attack the Baratie when Mihawk, having followed Krieg and his men, destroys Krieg's ship. Things are more dire when Luffy, Zoro and Usopp learn from Johnny and Yosaku that Nami stole the Merry Go.

As Nami steals the Merry Go, Mihawk has returned to finish the job, but Zoro challenges him to a duel in order to achieve his dream of being the world's strongest swordsman. Despite his best efforts, Zoro is easily outclassed by Mihawk and loses. Seeing potential in the young swordsman, Mihawk tells Zoro he has much to learn and will hold the title as the greatest swordsman until they duel again. Following his defeat, Zoro apologizes to Luffy for disappointing him and swears that until the day he defeats Mihawk, he will never lose another duel again. Luffy sends Zoro, Usopp, Johnny and Yosaku ahead to follow Nami so that he can defeat Krieg to pay his debt to the Baratie.

With Zeff held captive by Ghin, Sanji has no choice but to take Pearl's hits. He reveals that he worked on a cruise ship that Zeff attacked, and when a storm hit, the two were the only survivors. Zeff sacrificed his leg to save Sanji and gave Sanji food, as both shared the same dream of finding the legendary ocean, All Blue (supposedly the only place in the world all four seas (North, South, East and West) meet and where the seas' respective aquatic species also meet). No longer able to fight with his legs and be a pirate, Zeff founded the Baratie. Sanji reveals that he will defend the Baratie with his life, and Luffy responds by attacking the ship's porch with Gum Gum Axe.

Ghin finishes off Pearl, claiming that he wants to kill Sanji himself. A lengthy battle ensues but Ghin eventually gains the upper hand after Sanji breaks his ribs. Ghin, however, comes to terms with himself, realizing he does not have the strength to kill the man who saved him from malnutrition. He then begs Don Krieg to leave the Baratie alone but Krieg is just disgusted with this show of emotion. Because of this, Ghin is no longer a member of the Krieg pirates and Don Krieg decides to have him executed. He then pulls off one of his shoulder pads, attaches it to his hand and it turns into a launcher for one of his deadliest weapons, the MH5 Poison Gas Bomb. Even Ghin and the Krieg pirates are shocked at this length of execution and are quick to put on their masks (except Ghin who throws his in the water). The Baratie chefs swim away while Patty and Carne run inside with Zeff and Luffy attempts to make a beeline for Krieg but is thrown back by the Needle Gun concealed in the launcher shoulder pad. Krieg fires the MH5 while Luffy steals two masks from two Krieg pirates and throws them to Sanji and Ghin. He turns round to get another for himself but the pirates have vanished. Out of nowhere, a gas mask lands in Luffy's lap and he puts it on, just as the MH5 impacts and explodes.

Nojiko starts her story about Nami's childhood and their adopted mother, Bellemere, a former Marine. After a bloody battle in a small village between pirates and Marines that left her the only apparent survivor from both sides, Bellemere finds a toddler Nojiko holding a infant Nami. Taking the girls back to her home Cocoyashi, Bellemere decides to adopt Nami and Nojiko. Despite being poor and none of them being related by blood, they had a happy life. It is shown that as a child Nami was a prodigy in cartography (the study and making of maps and charts) and navigation.

Nojiko continues her story, explaining how their life was ruined when the Arlong Pirates first took over the village. Arlong forces the villagers to pay him in tribute or be killed (100,000 berries per adult and 50,000 per child). When the Fishmen arrive at Bellemere's house, she tries to fight back but is easily subdued. Having only 100,000 berries, Bellemere uses it to save Nami and Nojiko, which results in Arlong killing her. Seeing a map skillfully drawn by Nami, Arlong kidnaps her and shanghaies her into joining the Arlong Pirates to make maps and charts for them. Arlong does make a deal with Nami: if she can gather 100,000,000 berries for him, Arlong will free Cocoyashi Village. It is shown that for the last eight years Nami has stolen countless amounts of money from other pirates, thus explaining why she stole the Going Merry from the Straw Hats.

Meanwhile Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji run into Tashigi. Zoro defeats her reluctantly. Then Smoker catches up and tells Luffy that he must get through him to go to the Grand Line. Just when Smoker is about to finish off Luffy a mysterious man named Dragon saves him. A green gust of wind blows through that lets Buggy and Alvida escape. Miraculously saved from death by an unnatural green gust and a lightning bolt to Buggy, the Straw Hats rush out of Loguetown, only for Zoro to be stopped by Tashigi and Luffy to be stopped by Captain Smoker. The Straw Hats are able to escape Loguetown and proclaim why they are going to the Grand Line: Luffy to become King of the Pirates, Zoro to become the world's greatest swordsman, Nami to chart a map of the entire world, Usopp to become a brave warrior of the seas and Sanji to find the All Blue.

On a stormy night, a girl called Apis escapes from the Marines and is found drifting by the Straw hats. Upon learning that they are pirates, Apis hides some of the reasons why she is being pursued by the Marines. When the marines locate them, Apis tells the Straw Hats of an impending gust of wind. While this allows them to escape the Marines, it winds up sending them into the Calm Belt.

The Calm Belt is revealed to have no winds or currents as well as being the home of many giant sea kings. Apis forms a plan with Luffy's help and escapes the sea kings by riding with one's sneeze. Later, the crew reaches Battleship Island, where they listen to the soporific story of the island's creation. After following Apis into a cave where a dragon is hidden, Luffy and Nami find the reason why Apis is being chased.

Now that the crew understand why Apis was followed, they hurry to escape the island so Ryuuji can be saved, but they meet with Erik and the Marines. Zoro and Usopp bring the ship to a thin rock at the side while Nami and Apis get Ryuuji onto a cart. Luffy and Sanji fight the Marines to buy time for all preparations. In the end, the ship pulls the cart away on the search for Lost Island.

Erik arrives and announces he overheard everything and intends to steal their dragon. Luffy breaks a wall so they can escape while Zoro engages Erik.

Zoro tries to fight Erik, but Erik is more interested in chasing the dragon. Zoro manages to trip him up long enough to the rest to make it to the ship. Luffy then uses his long arm to pull Zoro onto the ship.

Admiral Nelson, who never fully trusted Erik, has mobilized the full extent of the 8th fleet. He has his ships surround the Going Merry, and deploys chains between them to prevent escape. They then begin shelling. Meanwhile, Erik boards the raft with Apis and Ryuuji and begins to row the raft away. Nelson orders his ship to shell Erik. When Erik knocks Apis out, Ryuuji comes to her aid. He then calls out and takes flight to attack Nelson. Nelson has him shot down.

Luffy talks to Ryuuji in his final moments and comes to understand just what is going on. The flock of dragons returns just as Lost Island (which was really Battleship Island) begins to re-surface. An angered Luffy uses them to launch an attack that destroys Nelson's flagship. The resurfacing Lost Island destroys the rest of the Marine ships, which were still chained together.

Apis is saddened by the death of Ryuuji but Luffy explains that the dragons come back to Lost Island be reborn. Nearby, an egg cracks open and a young dragon with Ryuuji's eyes emerges. Nelson, who has survived, is found by Erik who promptly cuts him down. Erik threatens the dragons which causes Luffy to fight and defeat him. With the dragons safe, the Straw Hats depart for the Grand Line. They sail to Reverse Mountain, where the force of the ocean causes the current to flow uphill and down into the Grand Line. On the way up, Erik emerges to fight one more time but Nami tricks him and knocks him into the rushing waters.[n 3]

As the Straw Hats ride down Reverse Mountain into the Grand Line, a huge whale appears in front of them. With the helm still broken, they are about to crash into it, but Luffy fires a cannon, sufficiently slowing the ship, just breaking Luffy's beloved seat, the ship's sheep figurehead. Infuriated, Luffy punches the whale directly in the eye. The whale swallows the Straw Hats and their ship. Only Luffy falls overboard and gets on the whale. The whale submerges. In the last second, Luffy notices a door on top of the whale. While Luffy winds up in some sort of passageway, his crew finds itself in front of a small island in the middle of green waters, with a clear blue-sky overhead. There they encounter Crocus, the whale's caretaker, who painted the inside of its stomach to look like the sky. Suddenly everything starts to shake as Laboon—which is the name of the whale—rams its head against the Red Line. Crocus leaves to give Laboon a sedative. Meanwhile, Luffy and two individuals, crash into the whale's stomach. As Crocus returns, they shot two cannonballs from their bazookas, to rip a hole in the whale’s stomach, but Crocus takes the cannonballs with his own body. Then Luffy knocks them both out. Leading the Straw Hats out of the whale, Crocus explains that Laboon is a whale with a heart like a person, who has been waiting for a certain group of pirates for fifty years.[n 4] |
Reception[edit]
The season's uncut home video release generally received positive reviews from critics due to its humor, fight sequences, characters and music. The Arlong Park storyline has been highlighted as the strongest of the season, although David Brook less favorably described these episodes as 'melodramatic' for Blueprint Review.[102][103][104] Commenting on the animation, several critics applauded the series' accuracy to the manga's art style, but noted that moments of limited animation betrayed the low budget of the series.[105][106]
Both John Sinnott and Neil Lumbard rated the season 'Highly Recommended' when writing for DVD Talk, with Lumbard describing Luffy as 'easily one of the most endearing, comical, and fun characters in anime history'.[107][108] Writing for Anime News Network, Carl Kimlinger awarded the first 26 episodes 'B' ratings, but found the 'emotional core' of the Captain Buggy episodes to be underwhelming and commented that the early episodes of the series did not match the standard that would be set by later episodes.[109] Writing for Starburst, Julian White claimed that the series was 'likely to give you one helluva migraine' and awarded 6/10 to the first 26 episodes.[110]IGN's David F. Smith awarded the first 13 episodes 7/10, also commenting on the slow pace of the episodes but conceding that 'you might just call it a convention of the genre'.[111]

In this image of Shanks from Luffy's hometown, Luffy was still quite young.
However, it is said that he got his scar from Blackbeard. Pictures of parasites in human stool. Did he get his scar when Blackbeard was still a part of Whitebeard's crew? Because I think that when he got this scar, Ace was already after Blackbeard and the commander of 2nd division, but at this time, Ace and Luffy were still young.

The story of the origin of the particular scar (left eye) is told in Chapter 434 / Episode 316. It's given to him by Blackbeard while still on Whitebeard's ship, as part of their crew. By the time Ace and Luffy have grown up, Shanks is one of the Emperors.
The conversation hits a more serious note as Shanks points to his scarred left eye. One of Whitebeard's crew gave it to him, Marshall D. Teach. Shanks has known what Teach has been up to all these years and tries to warn Whitebeard of what may happen if Ace and Teach meet, he begs Whitebeard to stop the search. When Whitebeard outright refuses and states he will teach Teach about morals, Shanks reacts by drawing his sword, stating the rampaging era will not be stopped. Whitebeard and Shanks clash weapons, splitting the skies to the shock of both captains' crew members.

Does he get his scar when Blackbeard was still part of Whitebeard's crew?
Presumably yes, as long as most of Blackbeard's activities happened as he posed as just another crew member of the Whitebeard pirates which Shanks deduced was his cover to how threatening he really is.
Presumably yes, as long as most of Blackbeard's activities happened as he posed as just another crew member of the Whitebeard pirates which Shanks deduced was his cover to how threatening he really is.
But to clarify more of your suspicions, this does mean that it took Shanks (at least) 10 whole years before he told Whitebeard this guy is sinister and strong.
The timeline is Shanks & crew docking at Luffy's village in Luffy's flashback from Episode of Luffy: Adventure on Hand Island. There was episode 4 of One Piece that shows Luffy's past but this flashback includes when/how he gets his scar & follows closer to Chapter 1: Romance Dawn
Luffy is 19 in the New World (has flashback) -> 12 years earlier caption -> Luffy is 7 & Shanks has scar.
The meeting with Whitebeard happens while the Strawhat Crew is in Water 7 when Luffy is age 17. Shanks only met with Whitebeard once he knew Ace was hunting him down, not just to tell him about the scar which might explain his wait.
Daz CDaz C
Shanks got his scar from Blackbeard the time he was with the Roger Pirates or before he created his own crew. At the meeting (ep.434) with Whitebeard, Shanks said they have been fighting since then, means that Shanks got his scar before he became the captain of Red Hair Pirates. Because, if you notice the flag of the Red Hair Pirates in chapter 1 or episode 1, the flag has a scar already.
yaeger90yaeger90
Perhaps. Before Whitebeard announced One Piece was real, he had a flashback of when Roger was still alive. In that flashback, he commented on how there was a member of his crew named 'Marshall D. Teach”, showing how Teach had joined before Shanks had his scars. Coincidentally, at Roger's execution, Shanks had his straw hat pulled down over his eyes, not giving any indication of having or not having the scar at that time.
user10873user10873
Shanks might have got that scar when he was with Roger Pirates, Red hair pirates flag had the scar mark so he must have got the scar before becoming a captian Or it can be a mistake by anime artist like they did in the episode 461 where he had both his hands intact.

5 Things Luffy Won't Eat
1.
The sound is a high, thin note of wrenched despair, and Nico Robin, while she has witnessed (and indeed committed) many things more terrible than a single human life ought have the capacity to contain, while she has long ceased to find surprise in any sort of human evils or suffering, had yet never thought to hear her bright, brilliant, ridiculous new Captain whimper.
She eyes him, none too sure of how she should now proceed. She has no idea what has gone so awry. Certainly there is sun in the sky of this summer island, friendly islanders and tourists on the beach, free food in the offering, and all Strawhat nakama present and correct. Nobody is injured, nobody is dying. Even the battered ship is receiving a free patching-up from the generous natives' shipwrights. Therefore it is unknowable why the Captain has slumped forward and buried his face in an orange-painted patio table on this pleasant beach. His outflung rubber arms are limp and his thin shoulders are quivering.
She has seen him injured near unto death, bloodied, skewered, poisoned, in agony, and there has been no pity in her for him. He was inspiring in extremis. Such spirit! The fighting grit that took down Crocodile. Brutal, silly, terrible young man.
This.. is pitiful.
Cautiously, she reaches out a hand - her own - and gently touches it to the back of his scruffy dark head. 'Mr Captain?'
He groans. This is not helpful. Robin straightens and turns to the remaining crew, where sanity still reins, albeit in a gallery of varyingly crooked expressions. 'What is the matter with him?'
The Swordsman, her strongest challenge and the greatest threat bar the Captain when this crew should betray her, quirks one sour eyebrow high on his forehead as other lines drag his mouth crossly down. 'That last thing you said,' he grunts. It almost isn't articulate words. The Navigator is chewing her knuckle and might be trying not to laugh. The Marksman looks fearful, although this is not unusual. The Cook's expression is bland. The reindeer - the Doctor - has uttered a horrified squeak and is a speeding dust trail headed back across the sand to the ship, and this she does not understand either.
In search of what horror her words have delivered, she repeats them, carefully. 'The native people will provide us free food while we are present upon this island, in accordance with their dietary beliefs. I have been assured of the nutritional value of this substance and am told most visitors consider it delicious.' She casts her eye out over the other parties on the beach. The islanders here will supply accommodation and food for travellers headed down the Grand Line entirely free of charge, and although there lacks a show of power among the natives, she is aware their religious discipline incorporates rigorous martial arts training to hone the body to the perfection demanded by their Gods, making them entirely able to handle the fact that many of the travellers under their hospitality are pirates.
'We're out of supplies,' the Cook states darkly, casting a sidelong glance at the Captain. It remains fixed on the slumped figure as he continues. 'We have no choice but to stock up on this island for the next leg of our journey.'
'How long?' Miss Navigator asks. Her mirth is gone now, replaced by dubious concern.
'Not long. Approximately three days to the next island, four days here until the log pose sets.' Robin had thought that they would enjoy the sunshine, peace, and generous provision while they waited, but apparently the world has ended somewhere between landfall and breakfast and nobody has seen fit to detail her regarding why.
'A week..' Miss Navigator all but whispers. 'You can survive without any food at all for a week.. Surely Luffy will be able to..?' Her eyes are doubting. They turn quickly shifty. 'Well, there are animals on this island, right, Zo--?'
'He'll have to manage,' the Swordsman interrupts. 'These damn monks are well trained. There's too many of them to fight off, and they're good people besides. We have to be here four days no matter what. And they're watching everyone, for all they don't look it. I suspect they stop being so hospitable to those who break their sacred taboos.'
Oh. And Robin.. well, she thinks she might be getting an inkling of what this is about now, which still does not mean she understands. 'I believe a slow roasting over open flame pits while the individual in question remains alive has been mentioned..'
Several eyes widen. The Captains audibly slurps, and moans in quite a different tone. He also finally raises his head. Most of the crew take a step back.
The Marksman quivers. 'Help! He's overcome by madness already!'
Robin looks on in astonishment as, like he's mourning a beloved friend, Luffy throws back his head and howls, 'MEEEEEEEAT!!!!'
The word echoes around the bright beach, halting people in their tracks, and abruptly every native islander in the vicinity has attention fixedly focused upon them.
'So, we'll be keeping a low profile on this shitty island, then?' mutters Mr Cook, his lips dropping his cigarette to the sand.
'Luffy!' The Navigator bounces her fist off the back of his head. 'Don't make these people mad! We don't have to pay for anything here!!!'
'Captain!' Robin appeals quickly, reasonably. 'Why not try some of the food that they gave us? It isn't only the synthesized protein -- see, we have fruit, and vegetables, and--' She pushes the tray she brought for them all in front of him. His lower lip quivers as he stares at the pale brown cake of substance the islanders use to replace the forbidden meat in their diet. He shoves the tray away and collapses face-first back down upon the orange table-top.
'LUFFY!'
'Captain?'
'Huh.'
'We need to run now! Before he turns to cannibalism!'
Only the Swordsman is silent.
The Captain raises his head again momentarily, only to pancake his upper body upon the surface of the table when he comes back down. An inarticulate mumble arises from the squashed result, which may be something along the lines of 'Gomu Gomu abject despair'.
Robin gapes. The rest of the party, shaking heads, or eyerolling, or keeping a furtive eye on the one who has succumbed to this peculiar madness, start to peel off to another table a respectably we're-not-with-him distance away, although the Cook does pause to commandeer the overflowing tray.
Mr Swordsman taps her pointedly on the shoulder.
'Leave him. Let him sort it out in his own head. He's had a shock.'
Robin blinks. 'I.. yes, he does seem to have suffered a severe blow to his worldview.'
She absorbs his replying grunt and shrug, and with a last distressed glance back to their unexpectedly defeated Captain, reluctantly follows the Swordsman away.

'You know what it is,' says the doctor-who-isn't-a-doctor. At least, Chopper says he's not a doctor. Everyone else thinks he is, though, because they all keep calling him that. But Chopper is pretty passionate about his stance on it, and Luffy would believe his own nakama first, of course, anyway.
'Uh-huh.' He nudges the plate, careful not to touch the kairoseki bars with his fist. 'That's a devil fruit. I ate one once by accident.' It's sliced up and half peeled, ready to eat. They haven't fed him in a while. Several minutes pass while they're all looking at it. At least, the guy who isn't a doctor and his assistants keep looking at it. Luffy, after twenty or so seconds, finds it more productive to investigate the inside of his left nostril. The fruit's just not that interesting, and as he's said, he's seen one before.
'Well.. don't you want to eat this one?'
His attention snaps back to the lab. He wipes his finger on the nasty white-tablecloth-thing the scientists gave him to wear when they took away his clothes. Not-a-doctor looks like he's getting short on patience, although Luffy doesn't know why, since he seemed perfectly interested in the devil fruit a moment ago, and isn't that what these people are studying? Isn't that why he's here, and Chopper, instead of in a real prison like everyone else?
'I'm not going to eat it.' Luffy shakes his head intently. 'I don't trust you people. Why would you want me to eat something that would give me more power?' He doesn't like concentrating, but all his instincts tell him this is important. 'I never met anyone who ate two devil fruits, and had two powers.' And you would think that he would have, by now, if there were such people. 'I don't like you guys. You took my nakama away. You stole my hat.' All the white-coated people take a step back, and it's several seconds before they cautiously return to their former places again. 'I won't eat a thing like that because you want me to, and that's the end of it.' He folds his arms and straightens his back.
Not-a-doctor gives a nasty little chuckle. 'They told me you could be smart.'
He doesn't seem disheartened now, and that isn't good. 'So. If I ate that thing, something bad would happen,' Luffy decides.
'Probably. Most likely.' That annoying chuckle again. 'The truth is, we don't absolutely know what would happen. That's why we'd like to see you eat it, Strawhat. It's all for the advancement of knowledge.'
'I'm not going to eat it,' Luffy says again, still wondering why the man still doesn't look as though he's upset to have lost the argument. But he is interested, a bit. It's more interesting than anything else that has happened in.. well, he doesn't actually know long they've been in this place. It was pretty interesting when they first arrived, being prodded with needles and scalpels, and strapped down into weird things, and injected with weird stuff, and frozen or burnt or squashed - although some of those things were also pretty uncomfortable, but that's still better than bored. They haven't done any of that in ages, though.
He's been very, very bored. Even with Chopper to talk to, although Chopper didn't talk much for a while at first. He's going to beat all hell out of the scientists when he gets free for that, whatever they did. But right now, he's still in a cage, so he prods at the fruit. 'Would it kill me?'
'We just told you, dear boy, we don't one-hundred-percent know.'
'It'd probably kill me,' he decides that means, and not-a-doctor doesn't deny it.
The fruit has pale and tasteless looking flesh. He remembers the Gomu Gomu fruit, and doesn't remember that it tasted of anything much, maybe a little bit nasty like it was starting to go off. It was just food, that happened to be in front of him. Food in such a position doesn't usually last long.
He's hungry.
But he does have some self-control.
Poke, poke.
The flesh of the fruit has holes in it now from his finger. The scientists lean forward with an excited, low murmur, and he remembers at the last moment not to lick his finger. He wipes that, too, on his clothes instead.
'What kind of a devil fruit is it?' It's a different shape and colour to the only other one he's ever seen.
'We don't know that, either.' Not-a-doctor's voice is giddy and high with excitement. 'This kind is completely unknown.'
'Hunh. A mystery fruit. I'm not gonna eat it.' He states that again, harder, because he's starting to resent this feeling they're just not getting the message.
'We think that you will.'
'I won't.' Poke, poke. One of the other scientists mutters something about taking the fruit back before it's mangled beyond all usefulness, but not-a-doctor ignores her.
'So, you don't know what it'll do to me, and -- you don't know what it'll do to me,' Luffy concludes, as they continue to wait. 'Why the hell would you think I'd eat that?'
'Well--' And not-a-doctor's face is all smiles. '--we have the means to force-feed it to you. Or maybe we can force-feed it to the reindeer instead; after all, he's much easier to handle outside the cage. But we'd rather see the results on a human for our scientific purposes. And it's better to ask politely first, isn't it, Strawhat?'
Luffy frowns. 'You'd give this to Chopper?' He looks across at his doctor, quivering in his own cage. Chopper still doesn't really speak whenever the scientists are around. His breath catches as he understands. 'If I won't eat this, you'll give it to Chopper? You can't do that! I won't let you!'
'There is one clear way to stop us. However--' not-a-doctor starts to lift the plate away '--you won't eat this.'
'Don't!' Luffy's hand shoots out, slamming down on fruit, plate and the hand holding it. While the scientist shrieks and holds a dripping hand bent at a funny angle off the wrist - whoops, that looks broken - Luffy scrapes every shard and morsel through the gap between the bars. 'I'm the captain. I'm the one who decided to invade Enies Lobby. Leave my nakama alone.'
'Yes,' not-a-doctor agrees savagely, hissing through bared teeth, face twisted unpleasantly.
'Luffy, don't do it! Luffy!!! If they do want to use it on me, they'll only find another! I don't want to live like this -- on my own -- please, Luffy, please don't eat that thing!'
He ignores Chopper's shrieks. 'You messed up,' he tells the scientists, picking plate shards from his fingers. 'I'm making a bet with you now.' He scrapes together the fruit and raises it to his lips. 'Because I won't die. I'm not going to die until I've become the Pirate King. So.. you better hope.. that this fruit--' The flesh is sour, and tastes faintly of rotting meat, and not especially like the one he remembers. '--that this second fruit won't give me the power to get outside of these bars.'
He packs the rest into his mouth, shards of plate and all, barely chews, and swallows.
'The whole rotten lot of you just bet your lives against it.'

The passenger is annoying, but he says he's a duke, and Nami likes him and he's paying them (which is almost the same thing), so he's a passenger nonetheless, and Luffy has been sternly told to behave, along with everyone else on the Going Merry bar Robin -- some of them almost as loudly. This might have something to do with their last two paying passengers. One of them strangely jumped off ship and swam back for shore within ten minutes of sailing, and the other had never made it so far as the ship, but Luffy wasn't entirely clear on the reasons. It was probably Zoro's fault for waving swords around, since he, Luffy - and Chopper and Usopp - had been very friendly. But according to Nami they aren't allowed to do that this time, either.
He isn't sure what this leaves him, but as he doesn't like the stranded duke anyway and wouldn't have had him on board if Nami's eyes hadn't turned to belli and her scalp sprouted horns, he opts to avoid and ignore the man. Nami had also covertly hit him on the head for this once with a disgusted hiss of 'Honestly, Luffy, do you have to be so rude?', but after the stupid man got himself in the way of a rocket from the crow's nest down to Merry's figurehead, the duke appeared to take the same approach right back at him. Nami says nothing more, neither does the duke, and Luffy takes this to mean they have an understanding.
Which means that right now, their passenger hasn't seen the captain where he's sprawled on his back on the deck watching a cloud shaped like Chopper make its way across the sky, because he's lording about in the way he does when he thinks Luffy and Zoro aren't around. Luffy switches from watching Chopper to watching the duke strut across the deck, silent until he reaches Nami's orange trees and casually raises a hand.
'OY!' He springs to his feet. 'Don't touch those, lousy donkey-faced duke!'
The branch pings back, orange plucked by reflex as the duke jumps three feet in the air. 'Why not?' he yelps, voice high and panicky.
Luffy whisks the orange from his hand and shoves it back into the dense leaves, wedging it in the branches. 'They're Nami's. Nobody said you could. Don't touch Nami's treasure.'
'They're not tre--' The duke swallows hard. 'Uh, that is, well -- now that I know, of course -- don't look at me like that, captain, it was purely unintentional, of course! I had no idea they were important!' He waves his hands around a lot. 'But you realise, that will only rot now it's been picked. And I am a paying passenger on this vessel, after all.' He gibbers about his private orchard at home and reaches cautiously to take the fruit back.
Luffy slaps his hand away. 'No.' The passenger's donkey face is turning a really interesting shade of red. 'These are special. I'm not allowed to touch them, and I'm her captain, and I'm her nakama. Don't touch Nami's treasure.'
'They're just oranges. And there are dozens.'
'Don't care. You want food, go ask Sanji. Leave Nami's oranges alone.'
With that, Luffy squats cross-legged on the deck in front of the orange trees, arms folded and chin set fiercely, and does his best to keep watch on the duke while ignoring him at the same time - which is surprisingly difficult - until he gives up and takes his donkey face away again.
***
It's less than a day later when he finds the discards on the floor, a messy peel with three segments, half-crushed, still left inside. He examines it all thoroughly, in case maybe it came from some other orange trees, but it is definitely one of Nami's. Because it's also the most forbidden of fruit, he examines it some more, running his fingers over the cool, waxy texture of the peel, pressing the segments to his nose.
And even though it's been there in the sun awhile, is embedded with a little dust from the deck, and looks vaguely like it's been trod on, it still smells good.
It would be, he's sure, a terrible waste to let something so precious get eaten by the seabirds, or knocked overboard, or eaten by Chopper, or left to rot. The stupid donkey-faced duke has already broken the great taboo, and surely Nami wouldn't begrudge.. no, he knows she would, but he already decided anyway, so he's already breaking off the squashed segments and sliding them into his mouth one by one, and he hunches over while he does it just because he's sitting like that, not because of guilt at all.
The orange tastes just as tangy and delicious as he knew it would, and it's funny the way the grit crunches between his teeth. He finishes the last broken piece with a broad grin on his face.
Then, because it seems another waste -- not to mention, incriminating evidence -- he eats the peel as well.

'LUFFY!!!'
Nami is pissed, which means his face is going to look like it's sprouting dumplings very soon, but he isn't surprised and he isn't sorry, so he meets her fury calmly. 'Uh-huh.'
'Why?!' Nami wails, a river from each eye and her voice shrill. 'Why would you do this? At the next island, we would have been rid of him and we would have been paid!' Thump. One dumpling. 'Moron! Idiot! Stupid! We won't get paid anything now!' Thump, thump, thump, thump. A whole bowlful of dumplings.. He's hungry. He catches her wrist.
'I didn't like him. Now he's gone, and that's that.' To be exact, he's picking himself up on the small island several hundred yards off, where Luffy rocketed him and his obnoxious luggage right after they got within range. It looks rocky and uninviting, and doesn't register on the log pose. There are probably monsters in the forest, but there's fruit on the trees too, so - hah - he won't starve, and the rest is up to him. 'Sanji, food!'
'You just had dinner!' A kick bounces him off the main mast. 'And pay attention to Nami-swan when she's talking!'
Luffy picks up his hat and carefully replaces it on his head. Nami is still a vibrating demon. 'He wasn't a good person,' he tells her. 'He can make his own way to his island duchy.'
'IT WASN'T ABOUT THAT!!!' Nami shrieks. There are phantom belli swirling in the air around her head and hellfire-like flames in her eyes.
Luffy scowls. 'I don't care about his money.'
The next thump spins him over the side of the ship while Chopper and Usopp howl for Zoro.

Two days later, when she counts her oranges, she does it again.

The passages through the temple are lit by pits of fire sunk into hollows in the walls, designs of bones and demonic monsters in the grills casting shadows in the light they make. But those, and the traps, and the weird guardians, ceased to be fun a while ago when the stinky torture-happy priests took his nakama, and the traps and the guardians turned into delays that have held them back far too long. Nami's treasure-hunting expedition can go to hell, Luffy decides as his feet pound against the stone floor. All he cares about now is beating those guys up, getting everyone back, and getting off this rotten island. Even if Nami does punch him later for running off without any gold.
At the approach to the last corner, they can hear Nami's screams - and Chopper's and Usopp's - and Sanji's yells, and Robin's silence mixed in with them. That's the last instant before the floor disappears beneath their feet.
Luffy barely has time to register the spikes! lining the base of the trap as he's falling. There's no leverage to do much, but somehow he twists in mid-air. If he thrusts three limbs back to meet the carpet of points first, the resistance of rubber flesh grants him time to move, salvaging his face and vital organs while his last free arm shoots for Zoro, a step behind him. Zoro yells, hitting the spikes feet-first even as he's caught around the waist, and Luffy yells too as the extra weight impales him further, but he springs his arm forward and rockets the swordsman out over the top of the pit. A thud and a curse tells him that Zoro is safe.
His left arm is still free, but the rest of him is held two feet from the ground, cradled among the spikes. Five of them pierce his body, rising almost the same distance again above him. He grips his free hand around the smooth sides of another spike that has an old, leering skull embedded upon it. Using that leverage and the advantage of elasticity, he wrenches his right wrist upwards until it slides clear and blood flows unhindered from the wound. Slowly, he repeats the process for his punctured left foot and calf, and right ankle. Splayed between the spikes painted with his blood, feet and hands braced, he eases up from the final and most deeply embedded, watching it sink back until he can no longer see it growing nastily from his middle, choking at the sensation as it pulls out of his back. He wrenches his body to one side and narrowly avoids re-impaling himself, feeling his shirt tug and then tear as he slides down the gaps between the spikes to base of the pit.
Faintly, in the gaps between his shuddering breaths, he can still hear his nakama calling. And cutting through the distant sound, Zoro, louder. 'Luffy, you alive?'
It takes longer than it should to choke out, 'Yeah.' He hears shuffling from above, but his body is wedged and he can't seem to find any strength to move, even to turn his head. 'Go.. get everyone and come back. I won't die.'
Zoro says, 'I can't walk,' and it just hangs there on the air. He can't hear Nami among the distant voices anymore. There could be a number of reasons for this, and he hopes they're the ones that involve her still being alive.
He does know that's not going to do any good at all if neither he nor Zoro can move to save them.
Luffy tries. He gets his hands braced underneath him and raises his head from the floor, even starts to lever himself up against the pressure of the spikes' smooth sides pushing him out of shape.. but it feels like Crocodile's hook punched straight through him all over again - feels, in fact, like it's still clawed inside - and the blood loss messes with his grip and makes his head spin. His body has nothing left to work with. He falls back onto his face. 'Ugh.'
Above him, beyond his sight, Zoro makes a tight, harsh sound, and there is a steel swish followed by a grunt. Something thuds damply onto the pit floor near his head. 'Oy, Luffy. Meat.'
'..What?'
He can smell the fresh blood, that isn't his own. It's not like him at all for the offer of food to turn his stomach - whether cooked, raw, or still wriggling - but he already knows what this is before he sees it, and he even knows what it is despite the fact that, when he sees it, it doesn't resemble much anymore. The jolt of realisation snaps off the spike he's bracing his left hand against and turns him half onto his back with the broken spar digging into his shoulder. 'You think I could eat that, Zoro?' His voice wobbles, shaking as much as the rest of him.
'It's fresh.' A glitter of light off white teeth in the shadows.
'It's not funny!'
'That's what you need, right? We don't have anything else. Not like it was any good to me in that state. Might not have ever been again. One of us has to get up and go pull those dumbasses out of their mess.' He can only just see the pale blur of Zoro's face in darkness beyond the lip of the darker pit. The swordsman sits slumped, his back against the corridor wall, breathing heavily.
'How the hell could you do that?' This is -- most of the time he understands Zoro, even when none of the others do, and Sanji and Nami will say it's because they're both just as crazy and nearly as stupid, but even he doesn't - couldn't - okay, maybe he does understand him, even now, but he doesn't want to. Because it's not okay to be okay with this. It makes things too difficult, the way Usopp did that time, and his instinct stops telling him what to do. There are tears in his eyes again and he doesn't like crying. 'Damn it, Zoro, how are you gonna be the world's greatest swordsman like--?'
Zoro snorts. 'It's not a hand. It's not important. You don't think I can be the world's greatest swordsman with one leg?' Challenge in that drained voice.
'No--' Wait, that's not what he meant to say. 'Of course you're gonna be the best!' he yells louder than he needs to, proclaiming it as a reminder to the world, hearing it echo around the passages of the temple. 'But - but - how the hell could I possibly-- d-damn it--'
Because he knows without being told, although Zoro's telling him anyway, the dry voice blandly stating, 'You don't have a lot of time.'
'Damn it!' he growls, and he raises the meat to his teeth and he thinks, furiously, as he tears into it, that it's meat, it's just meat, and only that, and he tries with everything in him not to taste it as it slides down his throat. Even though it's the thing his body is most crying out for.
He can still hear all their voices up ahead, including Nami's again, and knows that he can't waste a miracle.
Energy starts to seep back. Not much, but enough to move -- and if he can move, then he can beat these guys up, because there's no way anything else is gonna hold him back from that now. It takes unfamiliar effort to snap the spikes hemming him in, and to stretch his uninjured hand to grasp the top of the pit and rocket himself upwards. He sees the dark hollows of Zoro's eyes tracking him before the swordsman's head lolls, sees the black bandana pulled tight around a truncated right calf, the three swords tucked against the other bended knee.
'Zorrrrrrrrrooooooo,' he growls as he bounces from the corridor walls, ignoring the painful drag from his chest. It's not the time to pay attention to mere stupid wounds of any kind. 'I'm gonna go save them, Zoro! You wait for me right here!!!'

5.
It comes from the deck, creeping down the belly of the ship to the galley, rhythmic, insistent, the bane of his existence -- the steady thumping, thumping, thumping of overenthusiastic rubber fists on wood, the unending chant of: 'Food, food, food - Sanji, food! Food, food, food, food--'
Sanji bites clean through his cigarette, then spends several seconds frantically flailing to keep the lit end from falling into the day's lovingly prepared dish as it bounces from one palm to the other. Finally, it lands safely on the floor and he crushes it beneath his boot.
Damn Luffy.
He is used to the burden of feeding that bottomless pit they call a captain, but today, he must be on his guard more than usual.
Today, by all the inexplicable chance of nature, the numbskull swordsman strung a fishing line out over the side of the ship before spending the best part of the day comatose, and by means of what could only be a second miracle, actually awoke at the tug of a sizeable black diamond trout. While not so rare a delicacy as the blue tuna Luffy dispatched single-handedly some months back, it is still one of the most expensive fish Zeff had ever kept in his stocks at the Baratie, and it is a long time since Sanji has had the opportunity to prepare one -- and, moreover, his delicate, deprived angel of beauty Nami-swan has never tried it!
He has slaved for hours. The garnish is perfect. The sauce is perfect. The herbs are just right, and the fish itself - Heaven! He has worked miracles to bring out all the nuances of its rare flavour.
This means that if the shitty captain devours it all - once again - in one bite, then he will pound that grinning face into a rubber puddle, and Usopp can spend the next several days prising bits of him out of the planking.
Sanji straightens his clothes, sets his jaw, lifts up the tray, and thus prepared for battle ascends to the deck.
'FOOOOOOOOOD!!!' Luffy cheers, the instant he sets foot in the sunlight.
'IT'S FOR EVERYONE!' he roars back, narrowly saving his efforts from flight as a loose board catches his foot. The task of feeding everyone on this ship has numerous perils.
Luffy displays acute disappointment, having stretched out his mouth to epic proportions with both hands and poised himself to catch the meal - tray, plates, cutlery and all.
Sanji slams the tray down on the table, and slams his leg down across Luffy's swiftly-grabbing hands, pinning both wrists against the edge of the wood. 'Wait for Nami-swan and Robin-chwan, shitty captain,' he growls. The monster has no chivalry in him. What sort of a man stuffs his face before the gentle ladies are ready to eat? Other than, of course, the idiot marimo, who has already snuck a portion off the tray. But annoying and uncouth as he is, Zoro is nowhere near the scale of a chef's disaster that the captain represents, so Sanji merely sniffs, hands deep in pockets, and continues to restrain Luffy right where he is. Usopp and Chopper at least look too cowed to defy him.
'Nami-swaaaaaaan!!! Robiiiiin-chwan!!! Dinner is served! Come, savour the delights of one of the finest delicacies in all the seas, my two finer delicacies of the seas..!'
Zoro smacks him between the shoulders blades, choking off the words. 'Shut the hell up, dribbling love-cook, before you get to see my dinner second-hand.' Sanji sees red -- but no, Luffy. The prime danger is Luffy. He will not be distracted this time!
'Mellorine!!!' Nami and Robin are here. Such beauty dazzles his eyes. Yet he cannot allow himself to become too dazzled -- Luffy is trying to stretch his fingers, but fortunately lacks the necessary leverage.
'What did Luffy do?' Nami asks instantly.
'Nothing,' he responds, with great pride. Witness, ladies, he has restrained the beast! This once, this rare occasion, they can appreciate one of his finer dishes without feeling like they are eating the leftovers of a meal the captain ravaged. Success!
The ladies seat themselves and Robin, laughing, suggests, 'I think you can release him now, Mr Cook.' The lovely lady is sweet-tempered beyond the comprehension of mortals to find such gentle amusement in the slathering creature Sanji is now restraining from the food with his leg and both hands, as Luffy tries to stretch his neck and wide mouth to sweep the tray.
Reluctantly, he lets go, although he puts all his strength into a kick square to the top of the captain's head as a parting warning. The blow compresses Luffy's scruffy scalp down to the level of his waist, but he springs back unharmed, rocking in his seat, jarring Zoro's ale and receiving another smack from the shitty swordsman. Sanji places a normal serving in front of him. 'Eat.'
Luffy scowls and twists up his face, eying the single plate as though with deep offence.
'Sanji, it's delicious!' Nami-swan exclaims, and his life is complete.
'Excellent, Mr Cook,' Robin agrees, albeit with her mouth full (but Robin-chwan is soooo cute when she is unexpectedly vulgar!). 'I have not had this dish in many years, and never so fine an example.'
Sanji sways on his feet from the euphoria. Zoro kicks a chair at him, grunting and eyerolling. Usopp and Chopper are eating but looking furtive (eh, them. Whatever). Luffy stabs the centre of his fish steak sullenly with his fork, and shoves it into his mouth whole. (Eh, him. Whatever..)
There is a choked sound. A mangled projectile leaves the captain's mouth and smacks wetly against the mast.
Everyone freezes.
Everyone stares.
Luffy grabs his throat in both hands, gurgling, looks around wildly, then snatches and downs Zoro's ale.
'What the hell--?' There aren't that many things that can make the marimo draw steel on his captain.
'Ugh! Nasty! Ewwwwwww..' Luffy stuffs salad garnish in his mouth, but apparently this isn't enough to clear the flavour because he then starts dragging his tongue over the edge of the table.
'WHAT DID YOU SAY?!!!' Sanji shrieks.
'Huh. I thought you didn't want him to eat it, stupid cook,' Zoro grunts. He's put his sword away and, shrugging, returns to his meal. Robin-chwan is laughing behind her hand. Nami, Usoppp and Chopper appear to have no words.
The captain is not intimidated by the deadly professional fury he has invoked, rather looking deeply offended by the world as if it's thrown some unprecedented evil at him. 'I DON'T WANT ANY OF THAT NASTY, NASTY FISH! SANJI, MEAT! I WANT MEAT!'
Sanji kicks him full-strength off the side of the ship with a roar, but the shitty rubber ingrate catches the rail with a stretching arm and springs back, chanting: 'Meat, meat, meat, meat, meat!'
Robin-chwan is laughing (her sadistic streak is soooo cute!). 'Well,' she says smoothly, with a restraining hand to his shoulder that makes Sanji's heart skip a beat. 'I suppose there has to be one food in all the world that the captain really doesn't like.'

2.

3.

4.

Monkey D. 'Straw Hat'[n 1]Luffy[n 2] (Japanese: モンキー・D・ルフィHepburn: Monkī Dī Rufi) is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the One Piece manga series, created by Eiichiro Oda. Luffy made his debut in One Piece chapter #1 as a young boy who acquires the properties of rubber after inadvertently eating the supernatural Gum-Gum Fruit.
He sails from the East Blue Sea to the Grand Line in search of the legendary treasure, One Piece, to succeed Gol D. Roger as King of the Pirates. Luffy, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, recruits crew members, fights antagonists, and aids and befriends the inhabitants of several islands during his journey. Usually cheerful, he becomes serious when he fights. Luffy uses his elasticity to concentrate his power, executing a range of attacks. In his signature attack, Gum-Gum Pistol, he slingshots punches at opponents from a distance.
Luffy appears in most of the episodes, films, television specials, and OVAs of the manga's anime adaptations and several of the franchise's video games. Due to the series' international popularity, Luffy has become one of the world's most recognizable anime characters. In addition to the One Piece franchise, the character has appeared in a number of manga and anime series and collaborative video games. His critical reception has been largely positive.

Creation and conception[edit]
Development[edit]
When Eiichiro Oda created Luffy, he strove for a 'manliness' similar to that of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series.[1] Oda said that he named his main character 'Luffy' because he felt that the name suited him. When he later learned about the sailing term, 'luffing', he was delighted by the coincidence.[2] In his prototype one-shots, 'Romance Dawn', Oda refined the artistic style and story elements before publishing the final product a year later as the first chapter of One Piece. In the second version of 'Romance Dawn', Luffy resembled his design at the beginning of the series.[3] To please his readers, Oda added rubberization to Luffy for comic effect[2] and tries to make the character straightforward.[4]
Voice actors[edit]
In the original Japanese version of the One Piece anime series and later spin-offs of the franchise, Luffy was voiced by Mayumi Tanaka.[5] Tanaka said jokingly that she regrets providing Luffy's voice because she is a mother in real life and Luffy is much younger.[6] Asked about her voicing, Tanaka said that she 'strives for reality' in scenes where Luffy speaks when he is eating or touching his nose.[7] In the OVA Defeat the Pirate Ganzack!, Luffy was voiced by Urara Takano.[8]
The character was voiced by Erica Schroeder in the 4Kids English-language dub of the series and succeeded by Colleen Clinkenbeard in Funimation's English-language dub of the One Piece franchise.[9]
Description[edit]
Luffy is usually recognizable by his straw hat, a gift from 'Red-Haired' Shanks. In his early childhood, he wears a white shirt and blue shorts. The character has a scar under his left eye from stabbing himself to demonstrate his courage to Shanks and his crew.[10] He later wears a red vest, denim shorts and sandals before replacing his vest with a red, unbuttoned sea captain's coat[11] (revealing the X-shaped scar on his chest he received from Akainu),[12] and a yellow sash tied around his waist.[11]
Personality[edit]
Luffy is portrayed as a carefree, happy-go-lucky character with great ambition and a huge appetite, often thinking with his stomach and comically gorging himself. Optimistic[13] and generally good-hearted, he is not as dimwitted as many believe him to be and often demonstrates more understanding than the other characters expect. Knowing the danger ahead, Luffy is willing to risk his life to become King of the Pirates and protect his crew. A capable and reliable captain, he never puts his crew or himself at risk out of incompetence. During the Loguetown story arc, Smoker (a navy captain at the time) says that Luffy 'enjoys playing stupid'; Luffy responds with a mysterious smile.
He enlists Chopper and Brook for his crew for their personality or appearance, but also because of his instinctive ability to read people. Luffy needs key jobs filled by his crew (cook, navigator, doctor, musician and shipwright, filled by Sanji, Nami, Chopper, Brook and Franky respectively). At the beginning of the series, he said that he wanted at least 10 crew members with abilities he felt necessary for his goal. Despite his carefree personality, each crew member respects him in their own way.[14][15]Luffy is rarely concerned about the consequences of his actions, doing what he feels in the moment even if it leads to retaliation by a powerful force.[16]He is an extremely loyal captain, who has demonstrated throughout the series that he is willing to risk his life for the well-being of his crew.[17]
Abilities[edit]
Luffy's rubberiness is a result of eating a Devil Fruit named Gum-Gum fruit,[n 3][18] which makes him immune to electric attacks and most blunt forces, also gives him the ability to stretch his body at will. He uses his elasticity to accelerate part or all of his body to deliver punches, kicks, head butts and body checks or for propulsion. Like others exposed to Devil Fruit, Luffy cannot swim; when he is submerged in water or contacts the Sea-Prism Stone, he loses his strength and cannot move on his own. In addition to his Devil Fruit powers, he has immense strength and endurance. Where is my resume on linkedin.
Luffy's signature attack is the Gum-Gum Pistol, a punch which he learned during years of training. Another technique developed later in the series is Second Gear (ギア2 Gia Sekando), increasing his strength and speed for a short time but straining his body. Observing CP9's Shave (剃Soru) technique, Luffy adapted the move to his rubber body and matched the assassins' speed. Third Gear (ギア3 Gia Sādo), another technique, uses air in his bones to attack but makes him shrink afterwards.[19]Luffy can use both techniques simultaneously; after two years, he has gained better control of the techniques and is no longer affected by their drawbacks.
Eventually, Luffy develops his latent ability to use Haki (覇気, ambition). This ability has two main types: Armament Haki (武装色の覇気Busōshoku no Haki), an armor-like force which can amplify defense and the force of attacks and negate a Devil Fruit user's defense, allow physical contact and damage, and Observation Haki (見聞色の覇気Kenbunshoku no Haki), a sixth sense which can read a person's moves and detect their presence. He also has a rare third type, the Conquering King's Haki (覇王色の覇気Haōshoku no Haki), which can render people or animals near him unconscious.[20] Two years later, Luffy masters the three types of Haki and uses them with his improved attacks. As a result of his encounter with Magellan, he has also developed an immunity to poison (although it is shown that a strong poison may affect him, albeit very slowly). During his fight against Charlotte Katakuri, Luffy's Observation Haki gains the ability of seeing several seconds into the future.[21]
Luffy develops another technique, Fourth Gear (ギア4 Gia Fōsu) (similar to Third Gear), inflating his muscles to increase the size of his limbs (except for his legs). He can make destructive moves by compressing and releasing his limbs, and can fly in a similar fashion to CP9's Moon Walk (月歩Geppō) technique.[22]
Appearances[edit]
One Piece[edit]
Luffy first appears as a young boy in Windmill Village, who befriends the pirate 'Red-Haired' Shanks and intends to become one himself. He accidentally eats the Gum-Gum fruit and acquires rubber powers at the cost of being able to swim. Luffy is later saved at sea by Shanks from being devoured by a Sea King, a large sea beast, and Shanks loses an arm. Ten years later, Luffy leaves the village in search of the One Piece treasure and to become King of the Pirates. He meets swordsman Roronoa Zoro, ocean navigator and thief Nami, cowardly marksman and liar Usopp, and chivalrous chef Sanji, and invites them to join his crew. Luffy also encounters and defeats the East Blue pirate Buggy the Clown and the fishman Arlong, becoming known to the general populace and the pirate-hating Marines. The crew leaves the peaceful East Blue and enters the dangerous Grand Line on their ship the Going Merry. He later accepts an offer to return Princess Nefertari Vivi of Alabasta to her homeland to stop a rebellion incited by Seven Warlords of the Sea member and Baroque Works crime-syndicate leader Sir Crocodile. On the way Nami nearly dies of an illness, and crew go to the winter Drum Island, which was recently devastated by the Blackbeard Pirates. After Nami is healed, the reindeer doctor Tony Tony Chopper joins the Straw Hat crew. Upon arriving in Alabasta, Luffy briefly reunites with his brother Portgas D. Ace, a commander in the Whitebeard Pirates who is hunting his former subordinate Blackbeard. After defeating Crocodile, the World Government hides the fact that pirates saved the kingdom. Luffy accepts the mysterious Crocodile subordinate Nico Robin, as the archeologist of his crew. Robin's knowledge comes in handy as the crew ventures towards an island in the sky. Though the existence of Sky Islands is widely ridiculed, Luffy meets the pirate Blackbeard — but does not find out his name. Blackbeard encourages Luffy that Sky Islands do exist and dreams never die.
Luffy Meets Whitebeard Crew Fanfiction
While visiting Skypiea, the crew is drawn into a four-hundred year war over land. Luffy ends the war by defeating the god Eneru. Upon landing back in the Blue Seas, the Merry is heavily damaged and Luffy seeks a shipwright to repair it. He meets Admiral Aokiji, who easily defeats him. Luffy learns about Robin's background and faces enemies connected to her on Water 7, the island with the best shipwrights in the world. Luffy's crew aligns with the cyborg shipwright Franky, initially an enemy, against the World Government intelligence agency Cipher Pol No. 9. Luffy and his crew save Robin and Franky from the government at Enies Lobby. After their fight with CP9, Luffy encounters his grandfather, Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp. Garp tells him Shanks and Whitebeard are two of the Four Emperors, the most powerful pirates in the second half of the Grand Line. Luffy is surprised to learn from Garp that the leader of the Revolutionary Army which seeks to topple the World Government is Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy's father. On the way to Fishman Island in their new ship the Thousand Sunny which Franky built, Luffy encounters the skeletal musician Brook. Brook accepts Luffy's offer to join the crew before declining since his shadow has been stolen. To return Brook's shadow, they defeats Warlord Gecko Moria, and Brook becomes Luffy's long-sought musician of the crew. To enter Fishman Island, the crew takes a detour to the Sabaody Archipelago. Roger Pirates' First Mate Silvers Rayleigh is enlisted to coat the Thousand Sunny to enter ocean depths under the Red Line which marks the beginning of the second half of the Grand Line, known as the New World. By this time Luffy has gained worldwide fame as a notorious rookie with bounties over 100 million; these rookies are known as Supernovas and include Zoro, Trafalgar Law, Eustass Kidd, and Capone 'Gang' Bege. Yet Luffy, Zoro and rest of the Straw Hat Pirates are easily defeated by Admiral Kizaru after Luffy punches a World Noble, and Warlord Bartholomew Kuma sends the Straw Hat crew to separate parts of the world.
Stranded on Amazon Lily, an island ruled by the warlord Boa Hancock, Luffy impresses Hancock with his bravery and selflessness. Hancock falls in love with Luffy and brings him to the underground Impel Down prison to save his brother Ace, from execution after Ace was defeated by Blackbeard. Luffy breaks into the prison and meets previous foes and new allies, such as former Warlords Crocodile and Arlong's old captain Jimbei. Along with Buggy and members of the Revolutionary Army, Luffy frees the prisoners but Ace is transferred to Marineford for his execution. Luffy and Buggy lead the prisoners into the war in Marineford between the navy and Whitebeard's forces. Ace gives his life to save Luffy from Admiral Akainu. A broken Luffy is evacuated with Jimbei from Marineford by Trafalgar Law. Returning to Amazon Lily, Luffy remembers first meeting Ace; after Shanks left Windmill Village, Luffy's grandfather Garp left him in the care of his friend the bandit Curly Dadan. Luffy befriends Ace and Sabo, who are like brothers to him, but Sabo is seemingly killed by a World Noble. After returning to Marineford to send a hidden message to his crew, Luffy trains with Rayleigh on Ruskaina Island to become stronger.
Two years later the Straw Hats reunite and finally make it to Fishman Island. Luffy and the others meet Jimbei and the island's princess, Shirahoshi, and are drawn into a battle for the island against the fishman supremacist Hody Jones. He, the crew and Jimbei conceive of a plan to defeat Hody and his henchmen in a way which will alleviate racial tensions. After Hody's defeat, Jimbei promises to join the crew at a later date and Fishman Island seeks to join the Reverie summit of human kings held every four years. Luffy learns Akainu was promoted to Fleet Admiral and Blackbeard replaced Whitebeard as one of the Four Emperors. Luffy begins a feud with the Emperor Big Mom over control of Fishman Island. The crew leaves the ocean depths and enters the secret New World island Punk Hazard. Half of the crew is captured by Caesar Clown, a jealous rival of the scientist Vegapunk and a subordinate of the Warlord and underworld broker Donquixote Doflamingo. Luffy and his crew ally with Trafalgar Law, now a Warlord, who plans to kidnap Caesar as part of a plan to take down the Emperor Kaido. Samurai from the Wano Country, Kinemon and Momonosuke join the alliance to venture to Dressrosa, the kingdom ruled by Doflamingo. With Caesar hostage the alliance lands on Dressrosa, where Luffy enters a tournament to win Ace's Devil Fruit. Here he finds out that Sabo is still alive and a Revolutionary, and with Luffy's blessing Sabo consumes Ace's Devil Fruit. Due to the machinations of Doflamingo, some of the crew is forced to leave for Zou. Luffy and the rest of the crew are forced to fight for their lives when the stumble on the truth of Doflamingo's operations, who attempts to kill everyone in Dressrosa to keep the truth of his rule hidden. With the aid of his fellow competitors in the tournament, Luffy defeats Doflamingo. In the aftermath, seven pirate crews pledge their loyalty to Luffy, despite his protests, marking the formation of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
Afterwards the remaining crew and their friends are transported by their new subordinates to Zou and learn it was devastated by the forces of Emperor Kaido. Luffy also learns that Sanji, who was part of the group that head to Zou first had been blackmailed into an arranged marriage by his family to the daughter of Emperor Big Mom. The crew learn from the Mink Tribe about the Road Poneglyphs and their connection to the final island Raftel, where the One Piece is. An alliance between the Samurai, Mink, Straw Hats, and Law is made to defeat Kaido, who is revealed to rule over Wano via a puppet Shogun. But first, Luffy and half the crew, along with the Mink warriors Pedro and Carrot infiltrate Big Mom's territory Tottoland both to retrieve Sanji and copy the writing on the Road Poneglyph Big Mom has in her possession. Luffy and Sanji learn the wedding is a set-up to murder Sanji's family for their advanced technology, while Brook steals a printing of the Road Poneglyph. Big Mom's subordinates Jimbei and Bege betray her and with Luffy and Sanji enact a failed assassination attempt on Big Mom at the wedding, in front of the press. Jimbei joins the crew but is temporarily left behind as the rest of the crew barely escapes from Big Mom's territory. Luffy defeats two of Big Mom's three generals and is proclaimed by the press as the Fifth Emperor of the sea as his bounty skyrockets. This makes Luffy a hot topic at the Reverie, a global summit of 50 kings in Mary Geoise, the capital of the World Government above the Red Line. Most view him as a dangerous madman, but the kings of Sakura, Alabasta, Fishman Island, Dressrosa, and Prodence, secretly favor Luffy since he saved them from tyranny. Meanwhile Luffy and the others are separated entering the Wano Country. Luffy reunites with Zoro before meeting with the rest of the crew and alliance. Luffy challenges the Emperor Kaido, but is defeated and thrown in prison alongside fellow Supernova Eustass Kidd.
In other media[edit]
Luffy has appeared in every One Piece licensed electronic video game to date, including Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars, and is featured in the 2006 Dragon Ball Z-One Piece-Naruto crossover game Battle Stadium D.O.N. Luffy, Son Goku and Naruto Uzumaki were avatars in the MMORPGSecond Life for a Jump Festa promotion, 'Jumpland@Second Life'.[23] Luffy has also been mentioned in songs. He sings about being a wanted pirate in 'Wanted!'[24] and about One Piece in 'Every-One Peace!'[25] Luffy is a major playable character in the crossover game, J-Stars Victory VS.[26]
The character has made guest appearances in Japanese television shows and manga. Luffy and several other characters joined the cast of Dragon Ball in a spinoff entitled Cross Epoch.[27] On April 3, 2011, Luffy and the other One Piece protagonists appeared in the first episode of the Toriko anime series and the crossover manga chapter.[28] Luffy made a cameo appearance in a Weekly Shonen Jump episode of To Love-Ru, and the Gum-Gum was mentioned in the 50th episode of the Gin Tama anime series.[29] He has also appeared in the web comic, VG Cats.[30] In 2008, Toei Animation sponsored the ItalianPallavolo Modenavolleyball team; Pietro Rinaldi and Edoardo Ciabattini's black uniforms were decorated with an image of Luffy on the front.[31] Luffy appeared on the cover of the January 2010 issue of the Japanese fashion magazine Men's Non-No, the first manga character to do so. His clothes were designed by Shinichi 'Miter' Mita.[32]
Reception[edit]
Luffy led all three Shōnen Jump character popularity polls.[33][34][35] According to Funimation Entertainment's Mike McFarland and Christopher Sabat, Luffy was more likable than Dragon Ball'sSon Goku.[36] Joe McCulloch preferred Luffy to Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto because Luffy 'work[ed] his ass off' to achieve his goals after accidentally acquiring his powers.[37] Luffy was nominated in the Best Male Character category for the 2008 Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation Awards, losing to Ichigo Kurosaki of Bleach.[38][39] He was ranked 22nd on Chris Mackenzie's IGN list of top-25 anime characters of all time.[40]NTT customers chose Luffy as their second-favorite black-haired male anime character.[41] The Gum-Gum Gatling technique topped the male category in a Japanese survey of the most popular moves in manga and anime.[42] In a Japanese TV special from August 2017, Luffy was voted as the 8th 'strongest hero' from the Showa Era as well as the 4th one from the Heisei Era.[43]
Luffy has been praised in a number of publications. T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews called Luffy 'likabl[y] goofy' and an idealist with infectious optimism.[44] In a review of One Piece The Movie: Dead End no Bōken, the fourth One Piece film, The Star Online described him as 'an airhead and brilliant fighter'.[45] Rika Takahashi of EX wrote that Luffy's stretching powers set One Piece apart from 'the old stereotypical adventure manga' and the many other 'combat-oriented mangas [sic]', making the series 'something new and interesting'.[46]Anime News Network (ANN) writer Zac Bertschy found Luffy reminiscent of Rurouni Kenshin's character Himura Kenshin in personality and attitude, but still thought him entertaining.[47] Mania Entertainment's Bryce Coulter called Luffy a 'great shonen hero'.[48] ANN's Carl Kimlinger wrote, 'Colleen Clinkenbeard's Luffy continues to grow on you'.[49] In the final chapter of Naruto, Boruto Uzumaki makes a drawing of Luffy as a legacy of him and the series.[50]
In a Weekly Shonen Jump manga, Tsugihagi Hyouryuu Sakka (a character resembling Luffy) says, 'Instead of saying what you hate, say what you like!' In the One Piece manga, Luffy cited but changed it to 'Instead of saying what you like, say what you hate!' The meme was acknowledged in the crossover fighting game, J-Stars Victory VS[51]
